School Based Clinicians (SBC’s) are mental health care professionals placed in every middle school, high school, and alternative program of Springfield Public Schools.
Here are just a few of the things they do:
- work with high needs students and their families
- emphasize detection and early intervention
- prevent problems from becoming a crisis
- link students and families with other resources and services in the community
- home visits
- individual, group, and family counseling
One struggling student won an award for his turn-around. He went from 60-70% attendance to nearly 100% for the last two quarters. He passed every class during that time.
One student asked the SBC if she would teach him the things she had taught his friend, because his friend “doesn’t get in trouble in class anymore”.
A few of the programs sponsored by SBC’s over the summer months include:
- open gym at Carver Middle School and Central High School
- personal growth groups
- life skills groups
- jewelry making group
- Self-Injury: Parent Education Workshop
- Outdoor Challenge
SBC’s also help plan and organize transition activities in August like the Leadership Academy at Central High School and Parkview Freshmen Focus. These activities help incoming freshmen make new friends, meet school staff, and find their classes and lockers.
Forming positive new relationships with school staff and peers increases student confidence and leadership. Getting an early start can also help reduce future drop-outs, increase attendance, and improve overall school performance.
